Velcro Shirts

I love these long sleeve dress shirt, they have Velcro® tabs behind the buttons in the front (including tab behind the top button for wearing with a tie), and at the cuffs. So many of my clients know the frustration that arthritis, a stroke or limited finger dexterity can create for simple dressing tasks, buttoning a shirt is no longer one of them. Health Care Blue Book

I just discovered the website www.healthcarebluebook.com, it is a free consumer guide to help you determine fair prices in your area for healthcare services.  If you pay for your own healthcare, have a high deductible or need a service your insurance does not fully cover, this site may helpful. The Blue Book will help you find fair prices for surgery, hospital stays, doctor visits, medical tests and much more.

Unfortunately, it is difficult for consumers to determine fair pricing for healthcare. Prices are not generally published and the list prices (or billed charges) are higher than providers typically charge most of their patients with insurance. The Healthcare Blue Book is a free resource that shows a fair price for healthcare products and services to consumers.

Consumers with traditional health insurance frequently need to know how much healthcare services will cost. Average deductibles are increasing and can be $1000 or higher. Coinsurance rates, which are the percentage of the bill that the consumer must pay, range from 20 to 40%. Many consumers would prefer to use the doctor of their choice, instead of the one selected as “in-network” by their insurance company, as long as they knew they wouldn’t have to pay higher prices. There are also “non-covered services” that may not be covered by insurance. As health insurance companies shift more of the cost to consumers, consumers need to be able to choose healthcare services at fair prices.

I just discovered this cane offered by www.Elderluxe.com.

The Switch stick is a  folding walking cane that will allow you to keep moving and looking stylish.  They even have a kit that allows you to paint your own for the artists who want to personalize theirs.   This is for the fashionista in your life, bring some color into their world.

The cane is made of lightweight aluminum and offers adjustable heights.  The handle is ergonomic; it weighs approximately 12 oz. and has optional accessories such as a strap on bag and retractable ice tip. 

Determining and Ordering Proper Cane Length

“It is always best to consult your doctor for both type and length of cane she/he feels best for you.”- the Concierge

  1. Standing erect with both arms relaxed at your sides and wearing the shoes that you normally wear
  2. MEASURE from the floor at the outer side of the heel to your mid wrist (just before wrist bone, or second skin crease of inner wrist).
  3. AT PROPER CANE LENGTH: Shoulders should be even with each other. If you have an existing cane, look in the mirror with cane in place. If the shoulder of arm holding cane is higher than the other, your existing cane is too long. If this shoulder falls lower than the other, your existing cane is too short.
  4. Elbow flexion of about 25 degree angle, when in use.

 

Ideally, if requiring a walking cane as a mobility aid, consult a Physical Therapist to determine the proper cane length. Otherwise, please carefully follow the proceeding guidelines to determine the proper cane length…It is strongly recommended that you have someone assist you when measuring for the proper cane length of your walking cane for the first time.
